Ultrasonic Flowmeters

Ultrasonic flowmeters use sound waves to measure the flow of liquids and gases without disturbing the flow. The technology offers high precision and flexibility and is used in applications such as water and wastewater treatment, power plants and the chemical industry. With their non-contact measurement, ultrasonic flowmeters are ideal for hygienic processes and systems where minimal maintenance is desired. and flexible solution for measuring both liquids and gases in a variety of applications. With Katronic as a partner, we at OmniProcess can offer products that cover everything from energy measurement to process control.

More information

What is an ultrasonic flowmeter?

An ultrasonic flowmeter works by sending and receiving ultrasonic pulses between two sensors mounted on the outside of the pipe. By measuring the time it takes for the sound waves to pass through the medium, the flow rate can be accurately calculated. This means the meter can be used without affecting the integrity of the pipework or causing downtime, which is particularly beneficial in sensitive or hazardous environments.

Advantages of using ultrasonic flowmeters

  • Precision and accuracy: Katronic flowmeters have an accuracy of up to ±0.5 %, ensuring precise measurement results even in complex environments.
  • Flexibility: Can be used for a variety of media such as water, oil, chemicals and gases, making them a versatile solution for different industries.
  • Non-invasive measurement: As the sensors are mounted on the outside of the pipes, there is no need to interrupt production or open the system to install or maintain the meters.

Applications in Swedish industry

Katronics ultrasonic flowmeters are successfully used in many Swedish industries. Some of the most common applications include:

  • Water and wastewater management: For measuring water flow in piping systems, which is important for optimising distribution and reducing water losses.
  • Energy metering: In district heating systems and industrial processes, where the energy flow needs to be monitored and adjusted to ensure energy efficiency.
  • Chemical industry: For monitoring flows in processes where it is critical to have accurate measurements to avoid reaction errors and ensure product quality.

Comparison of popular models from Katronics

We offer a wide range of ultrasonic flowmeters that can be customised to different needs and applications. Here is an overview of some of our most popular models:

KATflow 100 has a measuring range of 10-3000 mm and can be used in a temperature range from -30 °C to +80 °C. It has an accuracy of ±1 % and is intended for permanent installation in water and wastewater systems.

KATflow 200 has a wider measuring range of 10-6500 mm and can handle temperatures between -30 °C and +250 °C. It has a high accuracy of ±0.5 % and is designed for portable measurement in industrial environments.

KATflow 230 has the same measuring range as KATflow 200, i.e. 10-6500 mm, and can withstand temperatures from -30 °C to +250 °C. With an accuracy of ±0.5 %, it is particularly suitable for energy measurement and process control.

KATflow 210 has a measuring range of 50-2500 mm and operates in temperatures from -30 °C to +130 °C. It has an accuracy of ±1 % and is designed for long-term measurements in the field and harsh environments

Efficient flow measurement in water and wastewater management

Ultrasonic flowmeters offer a reliable and efficient solution for water and wastewater management by enabling accurate measurements without the need to cut into the pipework. This reduces the risk of leakage and maintenance costs while ensuring accurate measurements even in difficult conditions. With the capacity to measure flows in pipes from 10 to 6500 mm in diameter, and temperature ranges from -30 °C to +250 °C, Katronics meters can be easily installed in everything from municipal sewer systems to industrial treatment plants, where they effectively monitor flows, identify leaks and optimise processes.

How to choose the right ultrasonic flowmeter

Choosing the right model is about understanding your specific needs and applications. Here are some key factors to consider:

  1. Pipe diameter and material: Check that the chosen model can handle the size and material of the pipes.
  2. Temperature and pressure: Make sure that the meter can handle the temperatures and pressures involved in your process.
  3. Media type: Different media require different types of sensors and settings. Our experts can help you identify the best solution for your application.

Installation and maintenance

Our ultrasonic flowmeters are designed for easy installation and minimal maintenance. To achieve the best results, we recommend that you:

  • Mounts the sensors on a straight pipe section without interferences like valves or bends.
  • Calibrates the meter regularly to ensure accurate measurement values.
  • Using the right type of sensor depending on the temperature and pressure in the system.
