More information

What does pH measurement mean?

pH indicates the concentration of oxonium ions [H₃O⁺] in a solution according to pH = -log [H₃O⁺]. A pH meter shows this indirectly by measuring the voltage that occurs between a glass electrode (sensitive to hydrogen ions) and a reference electrode. The voltage is converted (according to the Nernst equation) into pH value.

How industrial pH measurement works

  • Glass or ISFET electrode generates a voltage which, according to the Nernst equation, corresponds to the hydrogen ion concentration.
  • Reference electrode creates stable comparison potential; poisoning of the reference is a common source of error.
  • Temperature compensation is mandatory - even a 0.1 °C error can cause a 0.01 pH unit deviation.
  • Operational challenges: coating, pressure variations, chemical attack, CIP cycles and steam flushing. Correct sensor selection and predictive diagnostics reduce downtime and manual calibration.
