What is a redox meter? 

In redox meter is an instrument used to measure the redox potential (also called oxidation-reduction potential, ORP) of a liquid. The ORP is a measure of a solution's ability to either reduce or oxidise substances - in other words, how electrons are transferred in chemical reactions. 

The unit of redox potential is millivolt (mV) and can be used as an indicator of the chemical activity of the liquid, especially in processes where biological or chemical oxidation/reduction occurs. 

Common uses 

ORP meters are used in many different industries and applications: 

  • Water treatment: To control chlorine-based disinfection processes. 
  • Environmental monitoring: To analyse water quality in lakes, rivers and groundwater. 
  • Food industry: To monitor and control fermentation processes (e.g. in wine or cheese production). 
  • Aquariums and fish farms: To ensure the right environment for aquatic organisms. 
  • Chemical and process industries: To control redox-based chemical reactions. 

How does a redox meter work? 

A redox meter consists of two main components: 

  1. Measuring or indicating electrode - usually made of a precious metal (e.g. platinum or gold), which reacts with the solution. 
  2. Reference electrode - often a silver/silver chloride electrode (Ag/AgCl), which creates a stable reference voltage. 

The instrument measures the potential difference between these two electrodes. The result is expressed in millivolts and indicates whether the environment is oxidative (positive mV value) or reductive (negative mV value).
