How a pressure transmitter worksÂ
A pressure transmitter (often referred to as a pressure transducer or pressure sensor) is an instrument that converts a physical pressure into a standardised electrical signal, usually 4-20 mA or a digital fieldbus protocol. The process takes place in three steps: sensing → signal conversion → signal conditioning/transmission. Put simply:Â
- The sensing element (e.g. a thin metal or silicon membrane) deforms proportionally to the applied pressure. Â
- The deformation changes an electrical property - most commonly resistance (thin film or diffusion resistors in a Wheatstone bridge), capacitance or piezoelectric charge. Â
- The electronics measure this change, compensate for temperature effects, linearise the signal and send out a calibrated output signal (e.g. 4 mA at 0 % span → 20 mA at 100 % span). Â
